One Room Challenge: Week 1
So…… I am so excited to do this!!!! I love decorating and I love challenges. And I have always wanted to participate in the One Room Challenge but didn’t have a blog or the guts to do so. But since I am facing my fears, I felt that this would be a good step in that direction. For those of you that do not know what the One Room Challenge is, I will tell you. It is basically a challenge where you take one room and in 6 short weeks, completely redesign it. This is so my type of thing. Except I don’t think that I have ever completely finished a room. So this is a good chance to actually see a project through from beginning to end.
The room that I chose to redesign is my living room.We moved into our house just under two years ago. It was a new construction house, so basically it was a blank slate. And while I don’t exactly hate my living room the way it is, I have never truly LOVED it. I feel like it never quite reached its potential and that its design didn’t really flow or work together. When we moved in, I think I was still trying to create the Pinterest perfect house and fill it with the things that everyone else was using. And it really never work out. And then I grew up and started to really discover myself and what I like. I began to be confident in my own skin and that confidence translated into me finally figuring out my style, both fashion and decorating wise. And all of a sudden, things are falling into place for me. So funny how that works.
So here is how my living room looks right now (like literally, right now. I didn’t pick up or fluff the pillows or remove the children):
So here is my little inspiration board I put together. I wanted to incorporate a shiplap wall and a light peach/coral paint color. My shiplap wall will have a little twist to it that I am super excited to see how it turns out. The large black ornate frame in the before pictures will become the gold frame. Super awesome what a can of spray paint can do. I think I will keep the existing couch and try my hand at making a slipcover for it. Wish me luck on that.
I found a white vintage lampshade frame at the Vintage Whites Market this year. If you like all things vintage or antique, you would love the Vintage White Market. I want to make a hanging light over the piano with my lampshade find from this year.
I really really want a white fluffy rug. So I am hoping this rug from RugsUSA will work.
I like adding in fun colors and patterns and more trendy prints into my designs and using the throw pillows for that is the perfect way for someone who changes around rooms often. Plus it is not a huge money commitment either when you decide it is time to change. So I want to add in some leopard print and fun floral and bright colored velvet pillows.
I love having curtains on my windows. Right now I have gold spotted curtains that I made. And I like them but again, they just don’t seem to fit. I really like the look of these color blocked curtains. The white adds in the brightness I want and the color adds, well, some color. I haven’t decided exactly what color to put at the bottom but I am kinda liking the gold color. I love the look of these industrial curtain rods and since I am trying to do this on a budget, these ones from target are perfect.
And then a plant, of course. Probably not a fiddle leaf fig tree because I am really great at killing plants and I hear that these a kind of a high maintenance plant. So I will find something easy and not too expensive so I am not out too much when I kill it. I’ll try not to but just in case…
I like to incorporate new and old and bought and made things into my designs. I like color and white. I like adding different textures and different styles. I don’t know if I could narrow down my design style if I wanted to. When I design a room, I want it to be pretty, bright and happy. I want it to be comfortable. I want it to feel like our home and that we belong there. We love “treasure hunting” for antiques so I want to use things we have found in our adventures to help make the room feel more “us”.
Let me break down the photos one by one and tell you what appeals to me in each and how I want to incorporate it into my room.
I love the gallery wall with fun prints in the first picture. I love the furniture in fun bright colors and in a velvet texture. I love the natural/organic texture from the wood coffee table. I love the contrast of all those things against the white wall. Source
In the second picture, I love the neutral colored sofa with the contrasting piping. I love the mix of patterns in the throw pillows. And I love the funky arrangement of the items used in the gallery wall. This space looks lived in and comfy yet put together and stylish. Source
In the last picture I like the bright whites and the pop of color from the plants. I love the feel that real plants bring into a space. I love the light curtains and the blues used in this room. Source
So, now you have seen my plan. Let’s hope I can put this plan into action and get it done!
Check out the other guest participants here and the featured designers here. I can only hope that my room turns out half as good as the rooms the many other designers are creating! I am so excited to participate and learn from this experience!
